How does lemon juice work?
It is a known fact that citrus extracts have a bleaching effect on the skin and lemons are full of them. The alpha-hydroxy acid acts as an exfoliating agent which gently removes the damaged upper layer of the skin only to reveal a more radiant and lighter skin tone.
The antioxidants present in lemon juice fight inflammation and free radicals, thus, diminishing acne lesions and ultimately leading to an acne-free skin, which is an added benefit.
Therefore, your skin is a shade or two lighter, there are no awful blackheads or scars, no wrinkles, your skin is less oily and it glows like never before! What could be better?
How to apply lemon juice?
You can simply dip a cotton ball in lemon juice and gently pat the skin with it. Be sure to apply it evenly all over the blemished area. Wait for 20-30 minutes and then rinse off with cold water. If your skin stings or burns, then add some water and dilute the lemon juice.
If you have dry skin, then mix a small amount of honey or glycerin with the lemon juice before application else you may end up harming your skin. Lemon juice can also be used in combination with other ingredients, such as fuller’s earth, rose water, aloe, egg whites, etc.
One downside of lemon juice is that it makes your skin vulnerable to sun damage. Therefore, avoid going out in sunlight right after treating your skin with it. Also, it is advised that you apply lemon juice on alternate days. Daily or excessive use can steal the essential oils and dry out your skin.
